I have had the privilege of playing in the Mario Lemieux Celebratory Invitational on a few occasions as a foursome host for my law firm, Reed Smith LLP. These events had some of the greatest sports legends of all time and, one year, I was paired with Hall of Fame wide receiver, former Steeler and all around great guy, Lynn Swann. In events like that (and your average round), I bring enough cigars so that those that would like one can participate. Lynn was in.
We were in carts and he was with another guest in front of me. I gave Lynn a cigar and my lighter and went back to my cart behind him. He lit his cigar and turned around to throw the lighter back to me as I was in the driver’s seat. The toss was wayward and required to me to hang onto the steering wheel with my right hand and reach out as far as I could with my left to attempt to grab it. I’m a righty, but I somehow – in an immaculate fashion – managed to snag the lighter with the my left hand.
Lynn Swann said, “Nice catch.”
Years later I happened to run into Lynn at The Masters and retold him the story. He quipped, “That was a Bradshaw throw.”
